Pirate-Battling Senator to Address Tall Ships Conference

Senator HollingsSenator Ernest F. Hollings will address the 34th Annual Conference on Sail Training and Tall Ships.  Senator “Fritz” Hollings, who the New York Times called “the last of a breed once prevalent in Congress: the quick-witted wielder of the folksy metaphor and aphorism,” will offer his wit and wisdom to sail trainers from around the world.  During his 38 years in office, the “legend of South Carolina politics” became known as an expert in ocean policy and port security.  As a preview of the Senator’s humor, here are a few of his more notable quips:

On stubborness”  “There’s no education in the second kick of a mule.”

To an opposing colleague calling for a drug test:  “I’ll take a drug test if you take an IQ test.”

On the Enron scandal:  “I did not have political relations with that man, Ken Lay.”

And what of his efforts at battling piracy, a reader might ask?  Senator Hollings played a key role in creating legislation to fight the scourge of digital piracy.  –Posted by Eric J. Shaw, Ph.D., ASTA Education Director
