Closing Keynote - Eric J. Shaw, PhD., Captain U.S. Coast Guard (Ret.) Nov 9th at 1630

Professor Shaw joined the faculty of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island following his retirement from the U.S. Coast Guard at the rank of Captain and as commanding officer of Coast Guard Barque EAGLE, “America’s Tall Ship.”  His operational career also included assignments as commanding officer of the 270-foot medium-endurance Coast Guard Cutter LEGARE (WMEC 912), Portsmouth, VA; executive officer of CGC NORTHLAND (WMEC 904), Portsmouth, VA; operations officer of CGC SENECA (WMEC 906), Boston, MA; and combat information center officer and anti-submarine warfare officer of CGC JARVIS (WHEC 725), Honolulu, HI. His afloat service also included navigator of Barque EAGLE and underway deck watch officer aboard CGC COURAGEOUS (WMEC 622).  

Professor Shaw attended the College of Naval Command and Staff, Naval War College, Newport, RI, and followed on as a faculty member of the Naval Staff College, Naval War College, where he taught strategy and policy, international law, and maritime policy. He also taught nautical science at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT. His shore assignments also included school chief of the Command and Operations School and deputy director of the Coast Guard Leadership Development Center at the Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT; inaugurating the Coast Guard liaison position at the Navy Warfare Development Command, Newport, RI; and public affairs officer and flag lieutenant to the first district commander, Boston, MA. 

Dr. Shaw earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Virginia Tech. He holds a Master of Science degree in Operations Research from the University of New Haven, a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, and a Ph.D. in Humanities from Salve Regina University. His Ph.D. dissertation was titled “Controls on Developing Technology: U.S. Commercial Air Transportation During the Interwar Period, 1919-1939.” Captain Shaw’s military awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, USCG Commendation Medal (two awards), USCG Achievement Medal (three awards), USCG Meritorious Unit Commendation, Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation, and various other service and unit awards.

Keynote Speaker: Jed Pearsall
Jed Pearsall is president of Performance Research (Newport, RI), a company specializing in research, measurement, and strategic planning for corporate sponsorship of sports and special events.  The firm’s consulting and evaluation work affects over $500 million worth of sponsorship investments each year. A partial list of corporate clients includes Allstate, Anheuser-Busch, Coca-Cola, Kodak, Masterfoods, Sony Ericsson, UBS, and Visa.  Property clients include Disney, Indy Racing League, NASCAR, NCAA, NFL, Major League Soccer, and the Women’s Tennis Association. Performance Research does not find sponsors for properties or events, but rather evaluates the marketing impact for corporate sponsors once the relationships are in place.

Jed holds a doctorate in sports management from Temple University and completed undergraduate work in psychology at Dartmouth College and pre-doctoral studies at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.  Jed has been a featured speaker for the past 21 years at IEG’s annual conference on event maketing (Chicago), and is a co-author of the ANA’s  (Association of National Advertisers) Event Marketing Management Guide.   Prior to founding Performance Research, Pearsall was faculty member at Temple University specializing in Sociology of Sports.

The maritime industry has it’s own inherent risks and when accidents happen, management onshore must have a plan in place to respond and react.  Panelists discuss being prepared for incidents before they happen, how to handle communications within your organization and to the public (parents, press, board members, insurance companies), what to expect from a maritime investigator and how to work effectively with them.

Speaker: Captain Peg Brandon
Capt. Brandon will discuss the role of the shore side institution/company and it’s readiness to manage and respond to an emergency program challenge.

Capt. Brandon is Assistant Professor of Marine Transportation at Maine Maritime Academy.  Prior to her current appointment, she served as Captain, Nautical Science Faculty and Director of Marine Operations at Sea Education Association.  She has a Masters degree in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island and was the 2002 American Sail Training Association’s Sail Trainer of the Year.

Speaker: Jennifer Haddock
Ms. Haddock will discuss working with your crew and staff before, during and after an incident.

Ms. Haddock worked as an instructor/ Program Director for Outward Bound for 18 years.  For three years, she was Safety Director at the School for Wilderness Field Studies.  She has extensive sailing experience with Sea Education Association and other organizations.  Currently she is Marine Operations Coordinator for SEA.

Speaker: Brian Young
Mr. Young will discuss maritime accident/incident investigation.

Brian Young joined Mobil Shipping Company as an apprentice in 1986.  By 1996, he had successfully completed his BTEC/ Higher National Diploma in Nautical Sciences (Master Mariner) and continued to sail on Mobil’s Crude Oil, Clean Product and Chemical tankers that traded worldwide.  In 1999, Brian joined Inchcape Shipping Services in the United Arab Emerites as Port Captain and overlooked the operations of teh company for the port and local offshore area. Having immigrated to Canda in 2000, he took on the challenge of being a nautical instructor at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, eventually serving as Chief Instructor-Nautical Sciences. After working for six years in the maritime training sector, Brian took up employment as a Senior Marine Investigator with Transportation Safety Boad of Canada.
