FDA Galley Inspections on Tall Ships
Captain Wesley Heerssen, of the Sailing School Vessel Niagara, will report on his experience in dealing with the FDA in the summer, fall, and winter of 2010/ 2011. In July of 2010, an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritis occurred aboard Niagara while in the Port of Cleveland, OH, which infected 26 members of the crew, many of whom were paying trainees. This presentation will describe the events that transpired leading up to, during, and after the incident. The incidence of Salmonella Enteridis aboard Niagara was caused by human error, not inadequate galley design, but subsequent involvement of the FDA led to a decision by the Flagship Niagara League, Inc. to completely redesign and modernize the galley aboard Niagara to meet FDA regulations for vessels. This presentation intends to inform operators of the details of the Niagara’s case, and to make other vessel operators aware of existing FDA regulations that pertain to passenger, cargo, and towing vessels, and arguably to Sailing School Vessels. Following the 30-minute presentation, Captain Heerssen will lead a 15 minute discussion.
