40th Annual Conference – Call for Presenters

Tall Ships America’s 40th Annual Conference on Sail Training and Tall Ships will take place on February 5 and 6, 2013 in Erie, Pennsylvania at the Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel.  The two day conference will be preceded by the Safety Under Sail and the Education Under Sail Forums on February 4.

Tall Ships America invites you to become involved in the 2013 Annual Conference as a presenter.

The theme for this year’s conference is: Noon to Noon – A Record Run: how to fine tune programs, operations and crew for maximum success

Experienced shipmasters know that small adjustments can make a big difference over 24 hours: in terms of course and distance made good, in overall safety, in rate of wear and tear on the ship and crew, felicity of the crew and students’ experience, management of resources, and success of the big-picture mission.

Translating this into a general approach to conference topics, we will focus less on big concept new ideas and systems, and more on fine tuning business, programs and operations to make the incremental gains that aggregate to maximize success. In many ways, these are harder to find, and harder to stick to until they are proven or disproven, because they do not compel the attention like big, bold new ideas. Yet, in the long run (noon to noon and year to year), they can save or sink a ship or program.

The Tall Ships America Conference 2013 will be organized around five main topic areas:

~ Crew Training/Development

~ Ship’s Operations

~ Education

~ Ports

~ Administration

Share your knowledge and experience in one of these five areas with Tall Ships America members. Sessions may include a single presenter, co-presenters or a panel. Speakers should plan on making the session as interactive as possible.

Each session will last one hour and fifteen minutes. Speakers should jointly occupy not more than 60 minutes of the allotted time for each session, leaving 15 minutes for questions and discussion.

Presenters are also being sought for the two Forums:

Safety Under Sail Forum: Central theme: Risk Management
Education Under Sail Forum: Central themes: 1. Program/organizational sustainability  2. The state of the world’s oceans
Please submit a short paragraph describing your proposed session to Captain Deborah Hayes, dnmihayes@gmail.com Your description should include a working title, the format you envision (panel, individual presenter, co-presenters or interactive workshop) as well as a brief summary of what information will be presented. Please indicate whether you would prefer to present in the Conference or during one of the Forums.

All proposals should be submitted by October 15th.

Tall Ships America appreciates the valuable contributions that mariners, educators and administrators make by speaking at this conference. Speakers serve as volunteers and do not receive compensation, but are eligible for a reduced conference fee (registration fee is waived for the day portion of the day of the presentation(s)).

GUIDELINES FOR PRESENTERS All presenters will be asked to submit an electronic copy of the session prior to the conference. This will be posted on the Tall Ships America website. Please, no overt promotion of a specific company or product. If you plan on using handouts, plan on supplying 40 copies. Finally, presenters are expected to register for the conference.

Thank you and we look forward to reading your proposals.
