Brian Holmen, Tall Ships America Youth Forum Representative
Eliza Braunstein, TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Assistant
Individuals under the age of 26 are invited to attend a brain-storming and idea-sharing session focused on raising awaremness of and participation in the Tall Ships America Youth Forum and Crew Forum with the goal of promoting the continued involvement of youth in sail training.
Brian grew up in Park City, Utah, a small ski town very far from the ocean. However, this didn’t stop him from getting out to Los Angeles every summer to sail on the Brigantine Irving Johnson. Irving Johnson is where he got his introduction into tall ships and he ended up spending time on the boat every summer since 2009. When he first started sailing he was given the opportunity to sail on the Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, during the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Pacific Coast 2008. This experience opened his eyes to the tall ships and he saw it as a way to see the world. Since the beginning, Brian has sailed on six tall ships, including the Dutch Bark Europa and the Norwegian Ship Sorlandet. In the summer of 2013, Brian was an intern with Tall Ships America assisting them during the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Great Lakes 2013. Brian now is the U.S. representative and Vice-Chairman to the Sail Training International Youth Council. He hopes to make experiences like the ones he’s had possible for any person that is interested in sailing.
Eliza Braunstein is the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Assistant for Tall Ships America. Eliza learned to sail on the icy lakes of western Massachusetts and has been involved with tall ships since she sailed on Corwith Cramer in 2009. Upon deciding that she wanted to climb the rigging just one more time, she joined Niagara in 2010. Since then, she has sailed on Lynx, Bounty, Unicorn, Sørlandet, and Pride of Baltimore II. She also enjoys spending time on the 28-foot Islander Crystal Echo. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in European Studies and is interested in history, cooking, photography and sailing.
