Taking the Crisis Out of Communication: A Case Study on Bounty, Facebook, and Communities Under Duress in Social Media

The loss of a vessel is a multi-faceted event. One of the most notable and least analyzed aspects of the loss of the HMS Bounty are the events that occurred on their Facebook page prior, during and after the sinking – events that dominated the digital news cycle. This session will give attendants key take always for consideration of individual organization crisis communication plans.

Kathleen Moore

Kathleen is an Assistant Professor at the Tom Ridge School of Intelligence Studies at Mercyhurst University specializing in social media intelligence and analysis, and crisis communication in semantic environments. She recently completed her doctoral dissertation on the social media activity surrounding the sinking of the HMS Bounty. When able, Kathleen is a volunteer deckhand and ship’s cook.
