Workshops (off site, location TBD)

Hands-On Introduction to Wire Splicing

Speakers
Captain Sarah Armour, Schooner Brilliant, Mystic Seaport Museum
Captain Rick Miller, Professor of Marine Transportation, Maine Maritime Academy

Join us for a hands-on introduction to wire rope splicing with Captain Rick Miller. Wire rope splicing is a maritime craft with a rich history and significant relevance aboard traditionally rigged vessels today. But building the skillset to splice wire rope can feel intimidating and inaccessible to those without exposure or access to tools and equipment. The goal of this workshop is to take the mystery out of wire rope splicing with hands-on instruction. Learn basic principles and practical techniques in turning in a Liverpool wire rope eye splice in a rigging vise. Space is limited to 12 participants. Email erin@tallshipsamerica.org to register.

Sarah Armour serves as the captain of Schooner Brilliant, the flagship sail training vessel of Mystic Seaport Museum. She sits on the board of directors for Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, where she also sails as relief captain. Sarah has spent the last decade working in youth sail training, traditional sail, and experiential education. In addition to Brilliant and Clearwater, Sarah has sailed aboard SSV Geronimo, Pride of Baltimore II, Lady Maryland, and Schooner Rebecca.  She has a degree in Earth Systems Science from Cornell University, where she focused on applied ecology, sustainable agriculture, and environmental education.

Captain Richard (Rick) Miller is the Dean of Faculty and Professor of Marine Transportation at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine. His classes of instruction include Terrestrial Navigation (Coastal Piloting), Celestial Navigation, Seamanship, Electronic Navigation, Meteorology, and Marine Weather Routing. Rick earned his bachelor degree from Springfield College and a Master of Science in Education from Capella University. He has successfully blended his academic training as an educator with his passion for sailing for more than 40 years, sailing on a number of sail training vessels and with the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School. In 2008 he was master aboard Maine Maritime Academy’s schooner Bowdoin for a training expedition to the Arctic along the west coast of Greenland. Rick continues to be active as a mariner, sailing seasonally as a master on SEA’s Corwith Cramer and Robert C Seamans transiting Pacific and Atlantic basins.
